Individual performer | Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace |
Born in the tiny kingdom of Brunei on the Island of Borneo, Fina Ahimsa was born into a family of musicians. Her father was the lead guitarist and singer of a band while her mother was a model. Growing up in this environment surrounded by musicians and Artists, Fina grew to love music in all its forms. However, it wasn’t until Fina discovered West African music at the age of 28 that she felt a true connection with the musical vibrations of her soul. When she encountered the West African harps --kamele ngoni and kora-- on one of her many trips around the world, it was love at first sight! At the first sounds emerging from the harp, she found the music deeply resonating with her soul.
Upon discovering her passion, she plunge head first into her music journey traveling to Mali where she studied under Ngoni masters for 4 months. Spending her time in an ngoni workshop, she learnt to know the ngoni from its beginnings helping craft these exquisite instruments and as a rite of passage, building her own. Since then, she has been traveling the world sharing her passion wherever she can, busking on the streets, playing in bars and other venues. These days, she has taken the first steps towards professional musicianship by playing for sound healing with other musicians, collaborating with other professionals, and exploring her own solo sound. With her foundations rooted deep in West African music, Fina is dedicated to playing traditional and ancient rhythms, singing in the traditional Bambara language while also exploring additional musical style through collaborations with other musicians. Most recently she has experimented with hip hop music using traditional West African rhythms layered with modern hip hop beats.
