Paul comes from a farming family from near Tarland in Aberdeenshire. He began playing on a fiddle which he found under his spare bed at the age of five and began lessons a few years later at the local school. He received lessons in traditional Scottish Fiddle music from acclaimed teacher and performed Douglas Lawrence and would go on to win every major fiddle championship in Scotland. He's performed widely abroad, performed on radio, TV and stage and has cposed over 500 pieces in the Scottish idiom, including a symphony.
Paul regularly performs for the British Royal Family, is an honorary fellow of the Elphinstone Institute of the University of Aberdeen and his portraits hamg in Aberdeen Art Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland. During 2018/2019 Paul continued to perform while undergoing Chemotherapy and radiotherapy including a recital at Celtic Connections in Glasgow. Paul is married to acclaimed traditional singer Shona Donaldson and has two boys aged 13 and 10.
